Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar (SSN) college of Engineering, an Autonomous Institute, is the outcome of the vision and initiative of Padma Bhushan Dr. Shiv Nadar, Chairman, HCL Technologies, established in 1996 on a sprawling campus of 250 acres on the Rajiv Gandhi Salai (OMR). The institution stands out as a premier center of higher learning with a mission of pursuing excellence in education and research. The institution has consistently stood top among engineering colleges affiliated to Anna University, Chennai. SSN Institutions provide a variety of stimulating environments for intellectual development, free thinking, and personal growth, challenging its students with dynamic learning opportunities and equipping them with the skills, insights, attitudes and practical experiences that are necessary to take up responsibilities in the society. SSN CE is accredited by NAAC with A++ grade. NBA, AICTE, New Delhi has accredited 7 UG and 4 PG programs. Within a span of 22 years, SSN has grown into one of the top educational institutions in the country and becomes an autonomous institute in the year 2018. Some of the salient features of SSN are: Ranked 46th in Engineering Category and 81th among all educational institutions in India Rankings 2024 by NIRF, MHRD; The state-of-the-art infrastructure with over 1.8 million square feet of buildings; Spacious hostels, sports facilities and faculty quarters within the campus.

The Department of Chemistry was established in the year 1996. It serves to provide a strong foundation in Applied Chemistry, which in turn serves as a baseline for all engineering streams. The department has nine faculty members with Doctorate degrees in various specialized areas of chemistry and active in various research fields such as Corrosion, Energy storage, Photocatalysis, Polymer, Nuclear Chemistry, and Water pollution. The department has been recognized as a Research Centre by Anna University, Chennai for conducting Ph.D programme and a separate Chemical Science Research Centre has been established to carry out research in socially relevant technologies. The research centre has been strengthened by externally funded projects from DST, SERB, NRB, DRDO and consultancy from various industries.
